Your Local Osaka Guides

Headshot of local Osaka tour guide - Andy

Andy 🇬🇧

Flat-capped founder · Chief instigator of curiosity

Originally from the UK, Andy came to Japan for a year and stayed for nearly three decades. Having lived across the country and twice made Osaka home, he brings deep cultural knowledge, fluent Japanese, and an endless curiosity for how things really work here.

His tours feel less like lectures and more like wandering the city with a well-informed friend — full of stories, honesty, cultural rabbit holes, and a few laughs along the way.  Yes, the flat cap stays on.

Headshot of local Osaka tour guide - Scott

Scott 🇺🇸

“The Voice” · History, people & conversation

Scott has spent most of the past 16 years living in Osaka, developing a deep familiarity with the city through daily life rather than sightseeing. Originally from Phoenix, Arizona, he brings a calm, grounded presence shaped by long-term immersion in local neighbourhoods and routines.

Nicknamed “The Voice” for good reason, Scott is known for thoughtful conversation and a steady, reflective guiding style. With a strong interest in Japanese history and people, he believes the best way to understand Osaka is by listening — to the city, and to those who live in it.

Headshot of local Osaka tour guide - Anna

Anna 🇨🇭 🇯🇵

Culture-forward guide · Food, language & connection

With a Swiss-Japanese background and an Osakan mother, Anna brings genuine cultural fluency to every tour. Having lived in Japan for over five years, she guides in both English and Osaka dialect, creating relaxed, highly personal experiences shaped by conversation rather than scripts.

Her tours centre on local eateries, street food, and everyday Osaka — always placing food and places within their social, historical, and cultural context.

Tour guide, Adam Smith.

Adam 🇦🇺

Long-term, laid-back Kansai local

Adam has lived in Osaka for over 16 years and knows the city through everyday life rather than guidebooks. Originally from Phillip Island near Melbourne, he first came to Japan through his long-term involvement in traditional karate, which shaped his connection to Japanese culture and history.

Laid-back and approachable, Adam’s tours focus on seeing Osaka as it actually is — local streets, food spots, and small details that give the city its character. His style is relaxed, conversational, and shaped by curiosity rather than scripts.

Headshot of local Osaka tour guides - Maggie & Suzie

Maggie & Suzie 🇯🇵 🇬🇧

Resident morale officers

Maggie and Suzie are the official Hungry Osaka Tours mascots and Andy’s constant companions. While they don’t lead tours (health regulations, apparently), they take their behind-the-scenes roles seriously — keeping morale high, routines steady, and standards enforced through well-timed judgmental stares.

Maggie brings calm, big-sister authority. Suzie specialises in enthusiasm, chaos, and full-speed zoomies. Together, they oversee snack security, nap schedules, and mandatory belly rubs — ensuring Hungry Osaka runs exactly as it should.

Headshot of local Osaka tour guide - Tim

Tim 🇺🇸

History-minded explorer · Language, belief & context

Tim’s experience of Japan comes from living across multiple regions before settling in Osaka. Originally from Virginia, he has spent 16 years in Japan, including time in Nagano, Tochigi, and Okinawa — each shaping how he understands language, belief, and everyday culture.

Naturally curious and highly engaged, Tim brings a learning-focused approach to guiding. His long-standing interest in Japanese language, history, Shinto, and Buddhism informs how he explains what guests are seeing, helping connect places to the ideas and traditions behind them.

Headshot of local Osaka tour guide - Kenzo

Kenzo 🇦🇺 🇯🇵

Bridging cultures · Baseball, food & local life

Half Japanese and half Australian, Kenzo has lived in Osaka since 2003 and grown up shaped by both cultures. Drawn to the city’s humour, warmth, and energy, he connects naturally with people and everyday life here.

A passionate fan of Japanese baseball and local food, Kenzo enjoys sharing Osaka through its flavours, stories, and the small moments that make the city feel genuinely lived-in.
